I ran for Congress in 2006 to help take back our country from the President and the Republican leadership. I ran "for the rest of us" and I pledged to work to end this war, to create a moral domestic agenda, and to be fiscally responsible. I asked for your help and together we won a stunning upset victory.
In the six months that I have been New Hampshire's first Congresswoman, I have spoken out against the war on the floor of the House of Representatives and in the media; I have opposed the troop "surge" and I have refused to give the President a blank check for his war in Iraq. I even traveled to Iraq and Jordan to discuss the war with the generals, including General Petraeus, and to see for myself what was happening there. The trip only convinced me to fight harder to end the war.
I have sponsored legislation to help home health care workers, to protect the Upward Bound program, and to provide increased funding for Pell Grants. I have co-sponsored bills to restore habeas corpus, and to provide better health care for children, seniors, soldiers and veterans.
In addition, I have voted for legislation that Republican leadership has blocked for years -- an increase in the minimum wage, new investment in renewable energy, lobbying reform, whistleblower protection, oversight on "no bid" contracts, fiscal discipline in the budgeting process, and more.
There is a lot more work to do, but I remain deeply committed to serving and representing "the rest of us".
